Celebrate 60 years of Slurpee with Mountain Dew collab
Back in the late 1950s, Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen franchise operator based in Kansas, cobbled together a homemade frozen beverage machine using spare parts sourced from an automobile air conditioner. Almost a decade later, in 1966, convenience chain 7-Eleven licensed Knedlik’s invention, and launched one of the most iconic, beloved gas station snacks in American history: the Slurpee.
Six decades on, Knedlik’s legacy is still going strong — but it just got a wild flavor twist that would almost certainly shock the original inventor. To celebrate the Slurpee’s diamond anniversary, 7-Eleven dropped a special limited-run birthday flavor: Mountain Dew Confetti Chill. Billed by 7-Eleven as “a zesty lemon cake treat in frozen drink form”, this exclusive flavor is available at participating locations now through August 29.
The pairing is a surprising departure for Mountain Dew, a brand long known for its bright neon color and signature sharp lemon-lime profile, and public reaction online has been deeply split. One fan on X celebrated the new release with a post reading, “This is why we live in the greatest country on earth!” Others were far more skeptical, though.
In a Reddit thread discussing the new flavor, one commenter joked, “Eww. I would still try though.” When another user was asked if they enjoyed the new Slurpee, they replied, “Yes but it’s like drinking frosting.” Some people outright rejected the experimental flavor, too. One commenter put it bluntly: “I can’t even imagine the flavor of this abomination. Hold the handle down til it all comes out n then walk away.”
