Low Turnout Plagues Trump’s 250th Anniversary Great American State Fair

It appears President Donald Trump is growing accustomed to hosting events that fail to draw big crowds — and his multi-day Great American State Fair, planned to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary, is the latest sparsely attended gathering to add to the trend.

In the lead-up to the nation’s semiquincentennial, the Trump administration launched a series of high-profile projects across Washington, D.C. to mark this year’s July 4 holiday. The initiatives range from dyeing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool a custom shade marketed as “American flag blue” to hosting a UFC cage fight on the White House grounds.

None of these smaller events, however, were billed as nearly as ambitious or grand as the Great American State Fair, which set up across the National Mall. Yet almost a full week after the fair opened to the public, the massive effort has clearly failed to generate widespread public interest.

One viral TikTok clip of the event shows the sprawling fairgrounds with only a few dozen passersby scattered across the open space. The video’s text asks, “Why does the ‘Great American State Fair’ look so empty & the only thing people care about is the Ferris Wheel?”

Commenters on the post quickly joked about the shockingly low turnout. “I’ve seen graveyards with more people,” one user wrote. Another added, “there were more people in line for the Trader Joe’s summer tote bags.”

Even videos from creators who attended the event with excited, positive outlooks do not show crowded grounds. One popular clip from TikTok creator IdahoMAGAmom, who boasts more than 138,000 followers on the platform, follows the creator as she enters the fair’s dedicated Idaho booth. Only a few dozen other attendees are visible anywhere in the nearby area.
